Given the magnitude and cost of petroleum related projects, both in the up and downstream, potential losses due to natural disasters or man acts such as wars and terrorist attacks, can be huge. In the recent past such events caused massive losses to the insurance industry and one consequence is that insurance of future projects will require increasing collaboration among companies, underwriters and financial institutions in order to keep insurance costs at a manageable level. This session will examine the alternatives to insuring catastrophic risk in the petroleum industry from the perspectives of the petroleum companies and the underwriters.
Currently more than a dozen oil and gas producing nations are signatory to programmes such as the “Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative” (EITI).Other initiatives such as The “Publish What You Pay” Campaign have also gained attention and have the potential to improve the reputation of governments and O&G producers, attract foreign investment and ensure that the citizen’s of O&G producing nations ultimately benefit from their resources. In order for these initiatives to be successful they require a strong commitment from petroleum exploration and production companies to abide by the principles of transparency and good governance. This session will examine the results of such initiatives and discuss how to further promote the value of transparency and openness for the benefit of all stakeholders.
National Oil Companies have developed into formidable, global competitors to the traditional International Oil Companies. Fuelled by globalization, economical growth, strategic positioning and strong government support, NOC’s are expanding rapidly. The session will introduce two speakers representing an IOC and NOC respectively, who will discuss their vision of future i nteractions between these different models.
