BP1 - Experience and lessons learned from largest hydrocarbon
discoveries during the past decades

Chair: Prof. Dr. Yang Li
Director, Oilfield E&P Department, Sinopec, China
Speaker: Mr. Jean Marie Masset
Senior Vice President Exploration & Reservoir, Total, France
Speaker: Mr. Khaled Subai
Manager, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia

Despite the discovery of and production from thousands of fields worldwide, the major amounts of oil produced still come from a few giant fields with hydrocarbon reserves exceeding one billion barrels. This session will address the following question: Where (in which geologic habitats) were such fields discovered in past decades and when and where will similar fields be discovered in the not too distant future?

BP2 - Assessment of global oil and gas resources

Chair: Ms. Annell Bay
Vice President, Shell Energy resources company, USA
Speaker: Mr. Thomas Alhbrandt
Vice President Geology, GSL Energy Corporation, USA
Speaker: Prof. Alexey Kontorovich
Director, Research Institute for Oil and Gas Geology, Russian Federation
Speaker: Dr. Yves Mathieu
International Expert on Oil and Gas Reserves, IFP, France

One of the most challenging questions in our industry is the assessment of the oil and gas resources yet to be discovered. A global scale assessment project has been conducted under the auspices of the USGS’s World Energy Project.

In this session the main findings and conclusions of this exercise will be discussed by representatives from various institutions involved in the study, including the quality (reservoir rock, reservoir/structural architecture, fluid composition) of the hydrocarbons to be discovered, the technical and financial challenges of future hydrocarbon provinces (including but not restricted to frontier areas) and the methodology of the assessment.

BP3 - Advanced drilling and completion

Chair: Mr. Abdulhamid Aborshaid
Manager, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia
Speaker: Mr. Braulio Bastos
Well Engineering General Manager, Petrobras, Brazil
Speaker: Mr. Bill Kline
Manager Drilling and Subsurface Division, Exxon, USA

The oil and gas industry continuously strives to drill and complete wells better, faster, cheaper, safer, and with environmentally sound practices. This session will focus on extending our knowledge of drilling and completion practices by examining state-of-the-art techniques and exploring new and emerging technologies. Examples include:

• Integrated Well Planning (well design for completion, optimizing, selecting drilling parameters, risk analysis, etc).
• Rigs and Drilling Equipment (hybrid rigs, non-steel risers, robot drilling, etc).
• Drilling Challenges (remote locations, Max Reservoir Contact , small targets, well bore stability, etc).
• Drilling Techniques (drilling with casing, percussion drilling, lasers, managed pressure drilling, under balanced drilling, etc).
• Controlling the Well Path (data acquisition, vibration slide drilling, rotary steering, smart drill pipe, etc).
• Well Completion (under balanced completion, smart well completion, equalizers, inflatable packers, expandables, etc).

RT1 - Chasing the 3rd trillion

Moderator: Mr. Khaled Buraik
Chief Petroleum Engineer, Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia

The world has roughly one trillion STB of oil reserves; another one trillion has already been produced. As the energy demand increases, our industry needs to find and produce more oil. Both finding and producing the future reserves present unique challenges.

The easy to find oil is already discovered. Innovative technologies in Geophysics, drilling, production and enhanced oil recovery need to be developed and adapted if our industry is to meet this challenge. This session will focus on providing a vision for the E&P landscape leading to the discovery of the third trillion STB of oil reserves

RT2 - Reporting of reserves and resources

Moderator: Dr. Sigurd Heiberg
Project Manager, StatoilHydro and Chair Person.
Chairperson, UNECE ad hoc Group of Experts on the Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology, Norway.

In the free-market environment one of the key performance indicators of the listed oil and gas companies for the investors is the quantity, replacement and growth of the proved reserve base. For the national governments and authorities, the resource base is equally crucial information for planning, defining national budgets, securing security of supply and establishing policies that stimulate investment and protect consumers. However, current codes to report reserves and resources lack a universal standard and, in many cases, were not updated to reflect advances in technology.

The lack of clear and universally accepted rules may lead to the reporting of reserve figures that are not directly comparable to each other, subject to discretionary interpretation and, as seen in the recent past, substantial revisions. One of the most damaging consequences of this is loss of credibility in reserves reports and the market volatility associated with uncertainties in the reserves and resources base.

The UN ECE with the collaboration of the global professional associations in the Earth Sciences and with the IASB has been active since the late 1990s to develop a Common Code of Classification and Reporting. In this session high profile authorities and experts will discuss the latest achievements and progress on reserves and resources reporting.

RT3 - Hydrocarbons in ultra deep reservoirs

Moderator: Mr. Paul Siegele
VP, Strategic Planning, Chevron Corporation

The need to satisfy the growing thirst of the world for hydrocarbons brings exploration to deeper and more difficult prospects. We are now drilling very deep wells onshore and offshore, and have discovered, to our surprise, producible reservoirs below previously assumed basements.

Ultra deep reservoirs, ranging between 25000 to 35000 feet have tested porosities up to 20%. The panellists will discuss what conditions cause the preservation of porosity, inhibition of diagenetic cementation and depression of geothermal gradients thought to be responsible for this unique geological phenomenon. Can we predict them? Are there more hydrocarbons below our previous assumed economic basement?
